Cheri Mohn: Paleomorphic Series
The Paleomorphic Series by Cheri Mohn (1936–2005) will be exhibited in the Massillon Museum’s Studio M from November 7, 2010, through January 2, 2011.
Mohn’s Paleomorphic Series was created between 1972 and 1981. While taking geology classes at Youngstown State University, the artist was inspired by the patterns exhibited by mineral on the microscopic level in natural and polarized light. She viewed hundreds of thin sections of minerals through a microscope in the Geology Department with permission from department head, Dr. C. Earl Harris. When she found a particularly interesting pattern, she made a small color sketch, which she could use as a model for her larger paintings. Mohn explored the subject in acrylic, watercolor, scratchboard, oil pastels, and pencil—in a variety of shapes and sizes. “When she had her original Paleomorphic Show, about 1976, in Columbiana, Ohio, area geologists visited the show,” said Deb Altimus. “They were thrilled that an artist had brought their world into the realm of art.”
The artist exhibited her painting “Space Geo” in the Massillon Museum’s Annual Show in 1971. In 1993, she had a one-woman show at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, where she had earned a purchase award in 1970. She was was included in exhibitions in and was affiliated with galleries in Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, and New Mexico.
