Mount Union Fine Art Majors
"Studio: Problems and Solutions"
On display April 9 - May 16, 2010

Thirty Fine Arts majors from Mt. Union College have created an exhibition called “Studio: Problems and Solutions” to display in the Massillon Museum’s Studio M from April 9 through May 16, 2010.

The public is invited to meet the artists, view their work, and enjoy refreshments at the exhibition opening on Friday, April 9, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Fred F. Silk Community Room of the Massillon Museum. The party is free and open to all.

The artists whose work will be included are: Yasuhio Anno, Heidi Babos, Mari Ballentine, Carolyn Ch’ng, Candace Cheuvront, Anthony Contini, Nancy Faulhaber, Alyssa Hamilton, Nicole Hare, Rachel Keyser, Abby Krahling, Mary Larson, Douglas Laubacher, Makenna Lewis, Leann May, Martha McClaugherty, Cara McEldowney, Rachel Miller, Lauri Mori, Olivia Myers, Cong Nguyen, Saleena Niehaus, Kelli Paugh, Jenny Peteya, Joel Price, Caitlyn Ryan, Tia Smith, Lexi Verbos, Kristen Walker, and Kellsey Wartluff.

“The academic studio for visual arts can be an environment for practicing and developing newfound technical skills relating to different visual art media and to familiar and sharpen visual perceptual awareness. All studio projects have a theme or general design principle, which must be resolved by the student in an inventive and creative fashion,” said Robert Buganski, Associate Professor of Art and Chair of Mount Union’s Art Department.

“The problems posed to the students are always presented in a way which emphasizes mastery of technique and perceptual skills. However, technique and perceptual skills alone can lead to dull and uninspired ART. This can be remedied by having the student take an active interest in the works of art which have intrigued and inspired many generations of gallery and museum goers and to actively research contemporary artists and art movements,” Buganski continued.

In “Studio: Problems and Solutions,” students exhibit a variety of visual themes and studio media with various interpretations or solutions to the problems.

Accompanying each work of art is a written statement provided by the student. The first part of this statement is the student’s understanding of the project’s goals and objectives. The second part of the statement is a description of how they believe their artwork meets these goals and objectives.
