Emily Starr
"Self portraits have always intrigued me. Artists may surrender their borders and offer the viewer insight into the private realm of self reflection. The artist might also extend beyond internal reflection and project ideas formulated from external sources. They use their self image to explore ideas about the condition of the individual in our contemporary society. Sometimes, perhaps out of convenience, the artist needs a form from which to work and his/her own is readily available. In some cases, one may choose to create self portraits for all these reasons.
"These artworks contain images that emerge and recede within geometric and textural landscapes. I am interested in the visual dynamic between the organic form of the figure and structural lines that both surround and obscure it. The use of mixed media such as sand and gesso allowed further exploration in layering in a tactile way.
"This body of work, although it includes my image, is process oriented. I was inspired to create compositions that would incorporate the organic imagery of human form and the abstraction of lines and shapes."
Westerville, Ohio artist Emily Starr received her BA with art, drawing, photography and art history concentrations from Otterbein College in 2009. Recently, her work was exhibited at Miller Gallery.
