What better way to document a visit to the Massillon Museum than using a functioning, historical photobooth? The Andy Warhol Museum located in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, houses a working vintage photobooth and was the source of inspiration for the Photobooth
Fundraiser project. Not to mention the Massillon
Museum’s 60,000 photo collection!
Now that digital photography dominates, artists are less exposed to traditional forms of photography such as
gelatin silver prints, daguerreotypes, or pinhole cameras. Having a breadth of knowledge about photographic processes is important for artists, students, educators and many others. Vintage photobooths that use these traditional processes are being replaced with
digital techonology. It is important to preserve a classic photobooth, the first of its kind introduced during France’s Exhibition
Universal in the late 1800s.
The photobooth will be permanently housed at the Massillon Museum and utilized for a variety of events such as Do the Mu (a free monthly family event) and exhibit openings that happen numerous times throughout the year and are free to the public. It would also be used at the Annual Island Party and Fun Fest which are two free local festivals that bring together thousands of members of the community!
Most importantly, it would be utilized in educational programs at the Massillon Museum. Classes would range from photo manipulation, development techniques and processes, pinhole photography and many others. On the spot photo developing will help students understand the photo developing process. Not to mention, the quick developing will be able to serve the growth of students in the educational program!
With a photobooth located at the Massillon Museum, we hope it will become a frequent stop for travelers along the historical Lincoln Highway. A 4-picture strip will provide a souvenir for travelers and members of the community.
We anticipate a growing interest in photography for our
education department, and also a growing interest for people to use the photobooth while they are taking a trip in downtown Massillon!
Overall, we are working hard to reach the goal to get a
photobooth and appreciate your support!
Periodically, we will have fundraisers to reach our
goal. All proceeds directly fund the Photobooth Project.
Donations outside the fundraisers will be greatly
appreciated. If making a donation, just specify that you want it to go to the “Photobooth Project” fund.
