The Albert E. Hise Award. Purchase award made in honor of Mr. Albert E. Hise, curator Emeritus of the Massillon Museum, who retired June 1, 1969. Hise served as curator of the museum for thirty-three years, and originated the first exhibition in November, 1936.
From 1936 to 1940, the exhibition was open to Massillon artists and craftsmen, later including stark and eight adjoining counties. In 1945 all residents and former residents of Ohio became eligible. The show was then changed from November to the summer months in 1961 and the painting category excluded.
The museum now has two biennials in alternate years, the Regional Painting Show held in March and the Ohio Artists and Craftsmen Show in the summer in order to have only one competitive exhibit each year.
